This is easily the question I hear most often.
The answer is simple—you don’t need to worry.
Every baby is different. Some sleep through their entire session, while others spend part of the time awake, stretching, or watching the world around them.

Are Newborn Poses Safe?
Absolutely—but only when safety comes first.
As an experienced newborn photographer, every pose I use is chosen with your baby’s comfort and well-being in mind.
I never force a pose, and I never rush a baby who needs extra time. If your little one isn’t comfortable with something, we simply move on.
Some of the more elaborate newborn images you see online are actually composite photographs created during editing. At no point is a baby left unsupported.
Beautiful portraits are important, but your baby’s safety will always come before getting a particular image.
How Long Does a Newborn Session Last?
A full newborn session usually lasts two to three hours.
That may sound like a long time until you remember that babies set the schedule.
We pause for feedings, diaper changes, cuddles, and soothing whenever they’re needed. Rather than rushing through the session, I allow plenty of flexibility so parents can relax and enjoy the experience.

What Should Parents Wear?

Once family portraits are finished, one parent is welcome to take siblings home if needed while we continue photographing the baby.
What Should I Bring?
Honestly, not much.
My Charleston newborn studio is fully stocked with carefully selected wraps, blankets, bonnets, headbands, outfits, baskets, and timeless props.
I simply recommend bringing:
- Extra bottles if bottle-feeding
- A pacifier, even if your baby only uses it occasionally
- Extra diapers
- Formula or pumped milk if needed
- A change of clothes for everyone—just in case
Everything else is already here waiting for you.
My Baby Is Already Six Weeks Old. Is It Too Late?
Not at all.
While the sleepy, curled-up poses become less common after the first few weeks, babies up to six weeks old can still have beautiful newborn portraits.
At this stage, we often capture more eye contact, sweet expressions, and the beginnings of those first smiles.
The session simply becomes more baby-led, focusing on your baby’s unique personality instead of trying to recreate poses that no longer feel natural.
Every season of your baby’s first year deserves to be remembered.
